Hello, Class! This is Towako from MEL School.

How are you doing?

It was our first Q Skills for Success lesson in a while! Did you remember what we learned before the summer break?

This time, we returned to One Thing at a Time and thought again about an important question: What is the best way to study?

We also connected the ideas in the article to our own study habits. Can you stay focused when your smartphone is next to you? What kind of environment helps you concentrate?

See you next time!

Towako

<Lesson Review>

ELST

Listening A2.2 #16

You practiced listening to short conversations individually. Then, we checked the conversations together and studied some important grammar and vocabulary.

After that, you practiced role-playing in pairs and worked on shadowing individually.

Try to understand the situation as you listen, not just catch individual words.

Q Skills for Success Reading and Writing Level 1

Unit 2: What is the best way to study?

Reading 2: One Thing at a Time

It had been a while since we last worked on this article, so we started by listening and reading one paragraph at a time to review the content.

Do you remember the main idea?

Multitasking is bad for learning.

Work with the Reading

In Activity C, you practiced restating. You read each restatement and identified which paragraph expressed the same idea.

In Activity D, we returned to our Unit Question:

What is the best way to study?

Using information from the article, you thought about which ways of studying English are effective.

Restating is an important reading skill. 同じ内容を別の表現で言い換えられると、「文章を本当に理解できているか」を確認できます。

Extend: Think About Your Own Study Habits

Finally, you connected the ideas in the article to your own life.

You discussed:

Do you think it is more difficult for people to stay focused when using technology?

What helps you focus when you study?

Do you prefer quiet or music? Do you study better alone or around other people?

Then, you responded to this question in three sentences on Google Classroom:

Do you think it is good for you to use your smartphone when you are studying?

The goal is not just to understand the article. Use what you read to think about your own experience and express your ideas in English.

Lersson Report Advanced August 26, 2026

Hello, Class! This is Towako from MEL School.

How are you doing?

This week, we started our new textbook, Q Skills for Success Reading and Writing 2!

The new level was a little challenging, but that is exactly what we expected. The texts are longer, the vocabulary is more advanced, and you need to think more deeply about what you read.

Our first question is very relevant to our everyday lives:

Can you believe what you read online?

As you work through this new level, remember: Don't try to understand every word. Focus on the content and think about what the writer is trying to tell you.

See you next time!

Towako

Q Skills for Success Reading and Writing -2

Unit 1 Communication and Media

Can you believe what you read online?

We started by discussing our own experiences with the Internet and thinking about why some information online may not be true.

You also listened to The Q Classroom and discussed whether getting information online can sometimes cause problems.

Reading 1: Staying Safe Online

This was our first reading in the new textbook.

After studying the key vocabulary, you listened to the article and worked on several comprehension tasks. You had to identify important information and explain ideas from the text.

The new level was challenging because simply finding familiar words was not enough. You needed to follow the context and understand how the information in the article was connected.

As the texts become more difficult, this will become increasingly important.

Write What You Think

Finally, you discussed:

What are some good ways to stay safe online?

and

Have you ever had a problem like one of the people in the text? What happened?

After exchanging ideas with your classmates, you chose one question and wrote your own response.

Reading is not just about understanding what someone else has written. Think about the content, connect it to your own knowledge and experiences, and express your own ideas.

The new textbook is a step up, but we'll take it one step at a time!

Lesson Report MEL-3 August 26, 2026

Hello, Class! This is Towako from MEL School.

How was your summer vacation?

夏休み明け、久しぶりにみんなに会えて嬉しかったです!

少し間が空いたので、英語を聞いたり話したりする感覚をちょっと忘れていた人もいましたね。特に今回は、聞いた英文から場面をイメージして、2文をまとめてリピートするのに苦戦している様子も見られました。

でも大丈夫。英語もスポーツと同じで、使っているうちに少しずつ感覚が戻ってきます。また一緒にたくさん聞いて、話していきましょう!

(p. 115) Verbs to Learn #9 / Exercise-1

新しい動詞を使った文を聞いて、リピートしながら空欄を完成させました。

今回は特に、2文をひとまとまりで聞き、状況をイメージしてから再現する練習をしました。

久しぶりだったこともあり、少し難しかったですね。単語を一つずつ覚えるのではなく、「誰が、どんな場面で、何をしているのか」を頭に描きながら聞くことを意識していきましょう。

Lesson Report MEL-5 August 25, 2026

Hello, Class! This is Towako from MEL School.

How are you?

Yesterday, you practiced understanding English in meaningful chunks, reproducing key sentences, and using new expressions in communication. In ELST, you also discussed why it can sometimes be difficult to appreciate the great past achievements. Sharing your ideas with a partner helped you connect the reading topic with your own thoughts.

In Bridge Work, you learned expressions with have got and have got to. The goal was not simply to understand their meanings, but to listen, reproduce, and use them naturally in conversation.

At the end of the lesson, you met with the Advanced Class to discuss the Time Capsule project. It was a good opportunity to share information and finish it together.

See you on Thursday!

Towako

<Lesson review>

ELST|Reading A2.2 #4

You practiced the reading individually and wrote down the key sentences. After putting slashes between meaningful chunks, you read the sentences aloud and practiced repeating them with a partner.

You also recorded unfamiliar words in your My 練習帳 so that you can review and use them later.

Finally, you discussed this question with a partner:

Why is it hard to appreciate today?

This activity encouraged you to think beyond the text and express your own ideas in English.

Bridge Work 3|Chapter 28 Unit 2

(p. 46) Vocabulary in Use

#1. 感情に関することば

       #2. 環境問題に関することば

You reviewed vocabulary related to emotions by reading the sentences aloud.

You then learned words and expressions related to environmental issues. You listened, repeated, and completed the sentences. Reading in chunks helps you understand the meaning without translating every word separately.

(p. 44) Grammar and Communication 3|have got and have got to

With your textbooks closed, you listened to the sentences, repeated them, and typed what you heard in the chat box. You then opened the textbook to check the sentences and read them aloud.

In Exercise 3, you completed the questions individually, checked the sentences together, and practiced using the expressions through pair role-play.

  • have got expresses possession or a situation.

  • have got to expresses something that is necessary.

Through listening, reproduction, and role-play, you practiced using both expressions as part of real communication.

Lesson Review

You reflected on today’s learning and reviewed the expressions and skills you practiced.

Lesson Report Advanced August 24, 2026

Hello, Class! This is Towako from MEL School.

How was your summer break?

It was great to hear about your summer experiences through your two-minute presentations. You also practiced listening actively by taking notes and sharing which presentations interested or impressed you the most.

We also returned to our regular Advanced Class work—sharing your Psychology essays and practicing relative pronouns through listening, writing, and speaking.

It was a great start after the summer break!

See you next time!

Towako

Summer Break Presentation

You prepared a brief presentation about your summer break and used photos to help your classmates understand your experience.

While listening to each presentation, you took notes and thought about what interested you.

Afterward, you shared which presentation impressed you the most and explained why.

The goal was not only to speak, but also to listen with interest and respond to other people's ideas.

Q Skills for Success Reading and Writing -1

Unit 8 Psychology — What are you afraid of these days?

Unit Assignment

We reviewed the writing task and shared the essays you had posted on Google Classroom.

You wrote about a common fear using what you learned throughout the unit, including facts and supporting ideas.

Sharing your writing with the class gave you another opportunity to see how different people approach the same topic.

Bridge Work -3

Chapter 34 Unit 1 Ron has a bike he bought last year.

(p. 135) Vocabulary in Use

#1. 仕事や雇用に関することば

We studied vocabulary related to jobs and employment.

You practiced the pronunciation of the new words, completed the text individually, and checked how the words were used in context.

Relative Pronouns (pp. 130-131)

We continued practicing relative pronouns.

First, you listened to sentences, caught the meaning, reproduced them orally, and typed them in the chat room.

Then, you wrote sentences using relative pronouns and practiced repeating them with a partner.

The goal is to move beyond simply understanding the grammar rule and become able to produce these sentence patterns naturally and quickly.

Great work today! 🌟

Advanced August 8, 2026

Hello, Class! This is Towako from MEL School.

How are you doing?

This week, you completed the Unit Assignment for our Psychology unit.

Writing is more than putting sentences together. It starts with organizing your ideas, supporting them with facts, and explaining your reasoning clearly.

I was also impressed by the discussion after class about the Time Capsule project. It was great to see everyone thinking seriously about how to make your videos more engaging for an audience.

See you next week!

Towako

<Lesson review>

Q Skills for Success Reading and Writing -1

Unit 8 Psychology

What are you afraid of these days?

Writing Skill: Contrasting Ideas with however

We reviewed how to connect two contrasting ideas using however.

This expression is useful for showing balance in your writing and presenting different perspectives clearly.

You practiced combining sentences to make your writing smoother and more logical.

Unit Assignment

Write one or more paragraphs about a common fear.

Before writing, you brainstormed common fears and discussed with a partner whether they were reasonable or unreasonable.

Then, you chose one topic, researched facts about it, and planned your paragraph before writing.

Finally, you checked your work using the Self-Assessment and completed your first draft.

This process—brainstorming, planning, researching, writing, and revising—is exactly how effective academic writing is developed.

Time Capsule Discussion

After class, we met with the MEL-5 students to discuss the editing of the Time Capsule videos.

You exchanged ideas about how to organize the videos, communicate your message clearly, and make them interesting for viewers.

Creating a good video requires the same skills as writing: organizing information, considering your audience, and communicating your ideas effectively.

Lesson Report MEL-5 August 6, 2026

Hello, Class! This is Towako from MEL School.

How are you doing?

This week, we explored an important question:

Is doing many things at the same time really an effective way to study?

We learned that our brains work best when we focus on one thing at a time. This idea connects directly to how we study English at MEL—by listening carefully, thinking deeply, and practicing repeatedly.

See you next time!

Towako

ELST

Listening A2.2 #15

This time, you practiced ten short conversations.

Some of the conversations were quite challenging because they contained several pieces of information that were easy to confuse.

After checking the grammar and vocabulary together, you practiced role-playing in pairs.

Don't worry if you found some conversations difficult. Carefully organizing information while listening is an important skill that improves with practice.

Remember to add unfamiliar words to My 練習帳 and review them regularly.

Homework: Shadowing

Q Skills for Success Reading and Writing Level 1

Unit 2

What is the best way to study?

Reading 2: One Thing at a Time

Before reading, you learned new vocabulary and practiced skimming, an important reading strategy for quickly understanding the main idea of a text.

You also discussed which activities you can do at the same time and which require your full attention.

As you read the article, you gathered information and identified its main idea:

Multitasking is bad for learning.

We discussed how focusing on one task at a time helps us learn more effectively than trying to do several things at once.

This idea is especially important when studying English. Concentrating on one task, reviewing regularly, and practicing consistently will help you make steady progress.

Hello, Class! This is Towako from MEL School.

How are you doing?

This week, we continued exploring the Psychology unit and thought about an interesting question:

Are all fears reasonable?

As we discussed in class, good readers don't just understand what a text says—they evaluate the ideas and think about whether they make sense.

We also learned how word families and however can make your English more accurate and natural, especially in academic writing.

See you next week!

Towako

<Lesson review>

ELST Reading

B2.1 #3 Fossils and the Alps

This time, you learned how fossils found in the Alps provide evidence that the area was once covered by an ancient sea.

You studied the grammar and vocabulary in pairs, practiced reading aloud, and shared your Japanese translation on Google Classroom.

As always, remember to focus on understanding the ideas rather than translating word by word.

Q Skills for Success Reading and Writing -1

Unit 8 Psychology

What are you afraid of these days?

Reading 2: Can We Trust Our Fears?

We reviewed the article through overlapping reading and then discussed which fears are reasonable and which are unreasonable according to the text.

You also answered comprehension questions and supported your ideas with evidence from the article.

Next, you voted on a discussion question and wrote your own response. Sharing your opinions and supporting them with reasons is an important part of academic communication.

Vocabulary Skill

Word Families

You learned how words change depending on their part of speech.

For example:

  • fear → fear, fearful
  • danger → dangerous
  • belief → believe
  • safety → safe

Understanding word families helps you expand your vocabulary and choose the correct form when reading and writing.

Writing Skill

Contrasting Ideas with however

We began learning how to connect two contrasting ideas using however.

This is an essential skill for academic writing because it allows you to present balanced opinions and make your arguments clearer and more logical.
