Lesson Report MEL-5 September 10, 2026

Hello, Class! This is Towako from MEL School.

How are you doing?

This week's ELST Listening was quite challenging! You couldn't always find the answer by simply catching the words you heard. You needed to understand the whole conversation and infer what the speakers meant from the situation.

In Q Skills, we continued thinking about our own study habits and started a new Writing Skill: using but and so to connect ideas. These simple words help us explain our ideas more clearly.

See you next time!

Towako

<Lesson Review>

ELST

Listening A2.2 #18

You first worked on the listening questions individually.

This time, several questions required inference. The answer was not always stated directly, so you had to listen to the conversation, understand the situation, and think about what the speakers meant.

This was quite challenging!

After checking the conversations together, we studied important grammar and vocabulary and practiced them through pair role-play.

When you find new words, remember to add them to My 練習帳 and review them later.

Q Skills for Success Reading and Writing Level 1

Unit 2: What is the best way to study?

Write What You Think

We continued thinking about the Unit Question by discussing:

What things interrupt you when you are studying?

What is one way you can learn English better?

You connected what we have learned in this unit about focus and multitasking with your own study habits and shared your ideas with your classmates.

Writing Skill: Writing Sentences with but and so

We learned how to connect two ideas using but and so.

but shows a contrast between two ideas, while so shows a result.

You first completed sentences with but or so, and then practiced combining two sentences into one. We also checked where to use a comma.

Finally, you completed these sentences with your own ideas:

I want to learn English, so I ...

I want to learn English, but I ...

and shared them on Google Classroom.

Writing becomes clearer when you show the relationship between your ideas. Think about whether you want to show a contrast or a result, and choose the right connector.

Hello, Class! This is Towako from MEL School.

How are you doing?

Today, both ELST and Q Skills gave us a chance to think about how society changes and how we understand information about those changes.

In ELST, we listened to how family life in Britain has changed over the past fifty years and compared those changes with Japanese society. In Q Skills, we continued exploring misinformation in the media and learned why checking sources and accuracy is essential when we read or write about the world.

See you next week!

Towako

<Lesson Review>

ELST — Narration

B2.1 #4: The Changes in Family Life in Britain in the Past Fifty Years

You copied the hints into your notebook before listening, took notes, and then explained what you heard to your partner.

The narration introduced several factors that have changed family life in Britain, including:

  • the liberation of women
  • the social and economic effects of World War II
  • advances in science and medicine
  • lower infant death rates and better health
  • more effective birth control
  • changing attitudes toward religion, authority, and tradition

After retelling the information, you discussed:

What changes are similar to those in Japanese society?

This was a challenging B2-level narration with many ideas connected through cause and effect. The goal is not to remember every sentence. Listen for the key factors, organize them, and then reconstruct the main ideas in your own words.

We then checked the script together and studied important vocabulary and expressions.

Q Skills for Success Reading and Writing -2

Unit 1: Communication and Media

Can you believe what you read online?

Reading 2: Recognizing Misinformation in the Media

We continued reading about misinformation and worked on identifying and explaining the main ideas of the article.

In Work with the Reading, you answered comprehension questions and chose the main idea. You then looked more closely at each paragraph and explained how its information contributed to the overall message of the article.

At this level, it is not enough to simply find the sentence that contains the answer. Try to ask:

What is the writer's main point, and what information supports it?

Global Skills: Critical Thinking

We also focused on an important rule of academic writing:

List your sources and make sure your information is correct and accurate.

This connects directly to our Unit Question:

Can you believe what you read online?

When we find information online, we should not automatically accept it as true. Where did the information come from? What evidence supports it? Is the source reliable?

These are important questions not only for academic reading and writing, but also for understanding the enormous amount of information we encounter every day.

Lesson Report MEL-4 September 8, 2026

Hello, Class! This is Towako from MEL School.

How are you doing?

See you next time!

中学生の基礎英語 Level 2(9月号)

Lessons 81–85

まず、前回自分たちで書いたSummaryを見直し、使われているGrammarやExpressionsを確認しました。

特に今回は、ShingoとGordonのやり取りをどうまとめれば、聞いている人にストーリーが分かりやすく伝わるかをみんなで考えました。

その後、1週間分のストーリーを聞き、ペアでRetellingをしました。

これからは、用意されたExampleを覚えるだけではなく、

Understand → Choose the key information → Organize → Retell

の流れを自分でできるようにしていきましょう。

Bridge Work Book 2

Chapter 18 Unit 1

We must practice hard to win the match.

(p. 90) Grammar and Communication-1

to-infinitive: Purpose

Great work today! 🌟

Lesson Report Advanced September 7, 2026

Hello, Class! This is Towako from MEL School.

How are you doing?

Today, we worked on two different kinds of connections.

In ELST, we explored Yosemite and learned more about how its spectacular landscape was formed. After watching the video, we went beyond simply understanding the reading and considered a bigger question: Why do scientists investigate how the land became what it is today? What can we gain from understanding the past?

In Bridge Work, we continued working with relative pronouns, this time focusing on the objective case and practicing sentences that included different types of relative clauses. The goal is to move beyond identifying grammar patterns and become able to use them to connect ideas naturally.

See you next time!

Towako

<Lesson Review>

ELST

Reading B2.1 #5: Yosemite

You first practiced reading the text individually and then talked with a partner about what you understood.

We also watched a video about Yosemite to build our background knowledge and connect the English text with images of the actual landscape.

After watching the video, you discussed a bigger question:

What can we gain when scientists investigate how the land became what it is today?

Why does it matter to understand events that happened thousands or even millions of years ago?

Reading at this level is not just about understanding vocabulary and grammar. Use what you read as a starting point to learn about the world and ask new questions.

Bridge Work -3

Chapter 34 Unit 1

Ron has a bike he bought last year.

(p. 132) Grammar and Communication-2

Objective Relative Pronouns

We continued practicing relative clauses, this time focusing on objective relative pronouns.

After listening to and repeating the examples, you combined two sentences into one using relative pronouns and wrote your answers in the chat room.

For example:

Ron has a bike.
He bought it last year.

Ron has a bike he bought last year.

You then worked on longer texts in which different kinds of relative clauses were mixed together.

At this stage, don't think only about rules such as subjective or objective. First understand what the sentence is trying to say, and then think about how the ideas are connected.

The goal is to become able to use relative clauses naturally when you need to add information and express more complex ideas.
