Lesson Report MEL-5 May 26, 2026

Hello, Class! This is Towako from MEL School.

How are you doing?

This time, you explored two fascinating topics: dogs and artificial intelligence.

As technology continues to change the way we live and work, one important question is not just “What can AI do?” but also “What should humans continue to do?”

At MEL-5, English is not just something to study for tests—it is becoming a tool for understanding the world and expressing your own ideas.

See you next week!

ELST

Reading A2.1 #6 About dogs

This time, you worked on a reading passage about dogs.

First, you practiced reading individually, then worked on pair repeating to improve pronunciation and fluency.

You also wrote down new vocabulary in My 練習帳, building your own personal word bank step by step.

After reading, you talked with your partner about what you learned from the article.

Reading Focus

One especially interesting part of the article was:

But only now are we beginning to realize just how important that friendship could be.

ここで大事だったポイント:

① 倒置(inversion)

普通なら:

We are only now beginning to realize ...

ですが、

Only now が前に来たので、

are we beginning

という語順になっています。

これは「ようやく今になって」という強調です。

② just how

just how important

= どれほど大切か

ただの how important よりも強い表現ですね。

③ New research has shown ...

has shown は現在完了。

「研究の結果、今わかっていること」という意味です。

④ Why do we love an animal that was once so wild and fierce?

  • once = かつて

  • fierce = 獰猛な

つまり:

「昔はとても野性的で怖い動物だったのに、なぜ私たちは犬を愛しているのか?」

という問いです。

⑤ Could they in some ways be more intelligent than even our closest relative?

ここでの even は強調。

our closest relative
= 人間に最も近い動物(チンパンジーなど)

つまり:

「ある意味では、犬はチンパンジーより賢いこともあるの?」

という面白い問いでした。

この文章は、ただ「犬はかわいい」という話ではなく、

“Why are dogs so important to humans?”

を科学的に考える導入でしたね。

Q Skills for Success Reading and Writing Level 1

Unit 1 What is the future of work?
READING 2: AI at Work

We continued exploring the future of work, this time focusing on AI.

Before reading, you studied vocabulary and checked the meanings carefully.

Then, in the PREVIEW section, you shared your predictions and ideas in the chat room.

During QUICK WRITE, you discussed your opinions with a partner.

WORK WITH THE READING

You read AI at Work, completed comprehension tasks individually, and shared your answers.

Finally, you read along with the audio to strengthen both reading and listening skills.

Thinking Point

This week’s big question:

What can AI do well?
What should humans continue to do?

MEL-5 is about building the English skills to think about questions like these and communicate your ideas clearly.
